Personally, we think it’s deserving to say that every day should be Mother’s Day. But, here’s a brief history lesson on how our country came to dedicate this tradition. The American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908. By 1912 many states, towns and churches had adopted Mother’s Day as an annual holiday, and Jarvis had established the Mother’s Day International Association to help promote her cause. Her persistence paid off in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure officially establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
It’s worth a footnote to say that Anna Jarvis eventually became disillusioned with all the commercialism which rose up to surround Mother’s Day. So, maybe don’t rush out and get that card and flowers after all?
