The True Meaning of Memorial Day

Today we celebrate Memorial Day. It’s a sacred holiday in this country, dedicated to honoring all the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military. And in the spirit of this solemn occasion, we felt it worthy of breaking with our traditional subject matter to explain the true meaning of Memorial Day.

Did you know that the holiday’s origins can be traced back to the end of the Civil War? It was during springtime that families would gather to visit cemeteries and gravesites to honor those who, as President Lincoln so eloquently stated, “…gave their last full measure” in the service of their country. The original name of the gathering begun being called “Decoration Day”.

According to History.com, here’s how the holiday evolved to what we celebrate today

“Memorial Day, as Decoration Day gradually came to be known, originally honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War. But during World War I, the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict, and the holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars.

For decades, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30, the date selected for the first Decoration Day. But in 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May. In order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees; the change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday.”

Memorial Day is typically observed here at home through parades, get-togethers and backyard parties. But we should never lose sight of the true meaning of the holiday. To honor the sacrifice of those who served and died in the service of their country.

On the week of Memorial Day, FranNet wishes to express our thanks and support for all active and past duty members of our armed services. We wish you a safe and happy Memorial Day and hope that prosperity finds you as we begin the Summer season.
