In the 1980s, we were introduced to a new lexicon of terms like “downsizing.” Company loyalty—in both directions—went straight downhill from there. And so, we arrive to a new world order of business today. And what, exactly, does career tenure look like? We can sum up the sentiment with a set of startling (but obvious) facts from the U.S. Department of Labor’s 2016 report, Employee Tenure Summary:
- The average employee tenure was 4.2 years, down from 4.6 years in January 2014
- The average person changes jobs ten to fifteen times (with an average of 12 job changes) during his or her career
- Many workers spend five years or less in every job
- People born in the 1960s - 1980s averaged two job changes by 32 years of age, while present-day youths average closer to three or four
We’ve all come to the realization that people change jobs for dozens of reasons. Sometimes by choice, sometimes by necessity. But we can’t escape the fact that this exercise places a maximum amount of stress in our lives.
