Earlier this month, attendees gathered at the 2018 Multi-Unit Franchising Conference in Las Vegas. Held April 3-6 at the legendary Caesar’s Palace (where else?), the expo featured more than 220 franchise brands and product and service providers. The MUFC, as it is called, is a first-rate opportunity to network with franchisors and franchisees who specialize in building entrepreneurial empires. The 2018 MUFC featured some heavy hitters in the keynote speaker arena. Leading off was the prolific conservative columnist George Will. Said to own the most widely read national column, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Will has been writing for the Washington Post for four decades. The other two speaking headliners included Super Bowl MVP Steve Young, formerly of the San Francisco 49ers and Seth Mattison, founder of FutureSight Labs.
Meet & Greet
One specialty of this annual conference is its welcoming attitude. First time visitors had the ability to attend a special meet & greet session with the MUFC Advisory Board and other attendees. While there, they had the ability to ask questions and set managed expectations for the three-day event, directly from the board and past attendees.
Money and Law Rooms
The 2018 MUFC featured a dedicated Money Room and Law Room. For two hours daily, the room was open to visitors, allowing conference attendees to wander in without an appointment and seek advice from some of franchising’s most capable legal and funding minds. The Money Room’s purpose was to offer opportunities for one-on-one meetings with potential lenders, specifically designed to find the most workable funding solutions tailored to multi-unit growth—be they by traditional or alternative means. The Law Room also provided one-on-one visits with qualified franchise business attorneys. Attendees were able to have their questions and concerns answered in a personal setting with experienced franchise attorneys. These two rooms were a nice feature for attendees, to say the least!
The 2018 Multi Unit Franchising Conference didn’t go light on the general session topics. On the first day, the panel tackled the looming role of social media and how it’s shaping several different aspects of franchising today. Drilling further down, breakout panels discussed using social media for recruitment, avoiding common pitfalls and how to generate new customers.
On the conference’s second day, the general session topic was franchise business legislation. With all things congressional moving at a hectic pace in Washington, there was much to cover. Specific breakout panels addressed recent legislative and regulatory activity. On the docket for discussion was the new tax programs, the NLRB’s joint employer rulings to date, updated overtime rules, and recent changes in the state’s minimum wage laws.
The conference is obviously geared to the multi-unit franchise owner. And recent studies suggest that an increasing number of franchisees who enter the business are taking this aggressive route in building a personal entrepreneurial empire.
As a budding entrepreneur, multi-unit franchising may not be on your radar at the current time, however this annual conference is a must-attend for those considering three or more franchise locations.
